The scullery is not a hidden kitchen for the sake of hiding. It is a useful second layer: a place for appliances, cleanup, storage, and the preparation that should not have to sit on the main island all day.
A back room can make the main room feel more generous.
When it is planned properly, the route between the main room and the back room feels instinctive. It should be close enough for a tray to travel easily, yet separate enough that the visual noise of work does not take over a dinner table or a living room.
The result is a main kitchen that can stay open, social, and calm—without asking the household to pretend that cooking does not involve a great deal of real work.
